Confederation Invests in New Equipment to Train Students on Leading-Edge Trade Technologies

Source: Confederation College
New technologies are changing the way skilled trades workers do their jobs. That’s why Ontario’s colleges constantly adapt their programs to ensure graduates have the skills needed to work with these innovative technologies.
Confederation College recently received over $400,000 in funding from the Canadian government for its Red Seal Apprenticeship Enhancement Strategy. The college used the money to invest in new equipment and materials for its skilled trades and apprenticeship programs to meet evolving industry standards.
Students at Confederation’s School of Engineering Technology and Trades can now get hands-on training with some of the industry’s latest technologies. This specialized training not only expands the career opportunities available to Confederation graduates but also adds much-needed skilled workers to Northern Ontario communities.
Electric Vehicles, Robotic Welders, and More!
The automotive industry has experienced rapid transformation in recent years due to the rising popularity of electric vehicles (EVs). Today’s mechanics need to know how to repair and maintain vehicles that use this technology.
That’s why Confederation College used some of its federal funding to add an EV from Kia Performance to its automotive workshop. Students in the college’s Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship will now get some of the same training that automotive technicians working at Kia’s dealership are required to have.
The government grant also enabled Confederation to invest in a robotic welding machine for its Welding apprenticeship program. This machine can be operated remotely to perform welds in otherwise unsafe environments.
More new equipment is also on its way: The Industrial Mechanic Millwright apprenticeship program will soon receive milling machines and surface grinders, while the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician apprenticeship program will get a diesel engine to train students on heavy excavating equipment.
