SLC Adds New HVAC Apprenticeship Program

St. Lawrence College (SLC) has added a new apprenticeship program to their roster. In August, apprentices at SLC’s Kingston campus began training in the Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic apprenticeship program.
Innovative Hybrid Delivery Model
The program features an innovative hybrid delivery model designed to minimize the amount of time apprentices need to leave the on-the-job training portion of their apprenticeship for in-class learning. For each level, theoretical classes are delivered online over 12 weeks, meaning apprentices can continue to work full-time while they study.
These online classes are followed by three weeks of in-person practical learning at SLC’s new HVAC Lab, which is outfitted with modern equipment and tools donated by local industry partners.
In a recent news release, SLC President and CEO Glenn Vollebregt said of the program:
“SLC is committed to providing excellent training for our students in a real-world setting. The new HVAC Lab and hybrid delivery represents a significant step forward in our efforts to equip future HVAC professionals with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in this essential industry. We have already seen tremendous support and need from local employers for this and look forward to training apprentices to fill labour market needs.”
In-Demand Skills in the Latest HVAC Technology
Like most trades in Ontario, there’s an ever-growing demand for skilled workers in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) field. As people look for more cost-effective and energy-efficient ways to heat their homes, many are choosing to replace their furnaces and air conditioning systems with heat pumps.
Apprentices in SLC’s Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic program will learn how to install and service heat pumps. These skills will not only put them in high demand when they complete their training but will also give them the satisfaction of helping create a more sustainable future.
